FIFTEEN
The detectives didnât stay for very long. They only spoke to Fiete, Robby, and Aida, then they were gone, leaving the artists with even more questions. At least Fiete came out of his room after they had gone. Whatever they had told him seemed to have worked, and he emerged from the stuffy room, ate the food that Alfie gave him, showered, and then stood in the living room downstairs staring out the window.
âI wonder what they talked about,â Lauritz murmured, looking at Fiete from the door.
âGrace,â Lucas answered. âThey talked about Grace. They must have learnt something about her and wanted to know what Fiete knew.â
âFound out what?â Lauritz picked at some fluff on his jumper. âGrace wasnât the most mysterious of beings, was she?â
Lucas didnât answer. He wasnât sure of that himself. Grace seemed, on the surface, a pretty normal person, open and kind, but after her death, he realised that he didnât know all that much about her. Grace was a listener, and she made you feel good, but she didnât talk much. Not about herself, anyway. All he knew was that she hated mushrooms and liked weird old French films, but otherwise, everything he did know he had learnt about from Fiete or Olya, and even then, there wasnât much to it. He didnât even know her mumâs name. He should learn it, he decided, especially for the funeral.
âWhatâs happening with her room?â he asked, leading Lauritz away from the living room to let Fiete brood on his own.
âGraceâs room? Not sure. The inspector locked it, though, remember?â
Lucas nodded, then scratched the back of his head. âWonât her mum want her things?â
Lauritz shrugged. âProbably. We should have asked the detectives whilst they were here.â
The two boys stood in the hallway for a bit, then Lucas rolled his eyes.
âWeâre stupid.â
âAre we?â
âThey left their cards. We can call and ask.â He turned and started off for the kitchen, where theyâd stuck the cards to the fridge so that they all knew where they were.
âShould we?â Lauritz called as he caught up with him. âTheyâre in the middle of an investigation, and weâre going to call with this silly question?â
âIt wonât be silly to Graceâs mum,â Lucas pointed out. âI want to feel like weâre doing something useful, not just sitting around here twiddling our thumbs until they come back.â
Lauritz didnât argue further and followed Lucas into the kitchen. Sisse was in there, slumped at the kitchen table, twirling a pencil idly between her fingers. She sat up as they walked in and brushed tears from her face, offering a weak smile.
Lauritz walked over and let his arm fall heavily around her shoulders. âYou okay?â he asked quietly.
âNot really. You?â
He shrugged. âLucas wants to call the inspector.â
Sisse looked over at him with surprise. âWhy? They just left.â
âHe wants to ask them about Graceâs things,â Lauritz explained. âAbout getting her stuff back to her mum.â
âOh,â Sisse smiled. âThatâs nice, Lucas.â
âConvince your brother of that, will you?â he asked. He located the card amongst the magnets on the fridge and pulled it off.
